About us

The Centre for Development and Environment (CDE) is renowned nationally and internationally as a premier institution for sustainable development. With around 100 staff members based in Bern and in collaboration with institutional partners across Africa, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and beyond, CDE addresses important social-ecological challenges through engagements in science, policy, civil society, and the private sector. Currently, CDE focuses on five main development objectives: Ecosystem regeneration for sustainable livelihoods, Sustainable food systems and land investments, Just and resource-light economies, Institutions for sustainability, and Competencies for sustainability transformations.

Your Profile

Candidates are required to hold a PhD in a relevant domain of sustainable development and exhibit international recognition in sustainability research. The ideal candidate should have a substantial record in leading complex inter- and transdisciplinary research organizations, coupled with established skills in organizational and strategic leadership. The role necessitates enhancing the Centre's profile in sustainability sciences and practice, while maintaining and elevating its status as an academic partner for policy, society, the private sector, and administration.

Requirements

Applicants must possess extensive experience in forming transnational research partnerships, particularly with nations in the Global South, along with a proven record in securing third-party funding for both academic research and its practical implementation. A collaborative leadership style, intercultural competence, experience in knowledge transfer, exemplary management and communication skills, and the ability to inspire interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary teams characterize this demanding profile. Familiarity with Swiss and international science and development policy, as well as recognition as a trusted partner for both national and international implementation agencies, is expected. Proficiency in at least one of Switzerland's national languages and familiarity with its academic landscape is advantageous. Fluency in English is mandatory. The professorship will be hosted at CDE and affiliated with one of the departments or institutes of the Faculty of Science.
