The Department of Surgery provides care for patients 24/7, both elective and emergency cases requiring surgical intervention. It represents a centre of excellence, not only Swiss but also European, in several fields and in many of its surgical specialties.

Within this department, spinal surgery is attached to the Orthopaedic Surgery and Musculoskeletal Traumatology Service and constitutes the largest centre of its kind in Switzerland. It offers cutting-edge care covering all areas of reconstructive orthopaedic surgery and adult traumatology, including complex and highly specialised cases. The service performs more than 6,500 surgical interventions each year and provides approximately 45,000 consultations. It relies on a multidisciplinary approach, high-level infrastructure, and strong involvement in university teaching and clinical research.

This position is newly created and is part of the ALTER deployment aimed at ensuring compliance of work organisation with the Labour Law (LTr).

As a head of clinic holding a specialist title in orthopaedic surgery, you will join the spinal surgery unit as part of a specialisation. This unit performs approximately 350 spinal surgery interventions per year, in collaboration with the paediatric orthopaedics and traumatology unit. It enjoys international recognition, particularly in the fields of spinal endoscopy, surgery of complex deformities, and spinal trauma.

In this role, you will ensure a full clinical activity, including surgical interventions and inpatient care. You will also actively contribute to the unit’s projects.

You demonstrate rigour, clinical acumen, and strong analytical skills in managing sometimes complex situations, including short-term complication management. Thanks to your organisational skills and ability to prioritise, you efficiently manage your clinical activities while responding to multiple demands (patients, phone calls, correspondence, meetings).

You operate in a demanding environment at the interface of care, teaching, and research. In this capacity, you collaborate closely with the entire medical and nursing team and ensure clear, smooth, and respectful communication with both colleagues and patients, adapting your language to their understanding.

Relying on your team spirit, you show solidarity in the face of unforeseen events and high workloads. As a head of clinic, you actively participate in supervising and training junior doctors, adopting a mentorship role and sharing your expertise.

You take part in the on-call duties of the spinal surgery unit, in a coordinated system with the Neurosurgery Service, notably within the framework of the joint on-call for spinal emergencies.

The clinical activity is part of a structured and demanding postgraduate training pathway aimed at specialisation in spinal surgery. This environment offers recognised development opportunities, including high-level practical and theoretical training, notably through collaborations with the SFITS (Swiss Foundation for Innovation and Training in Surgery).

You hold the federal medical diploma or have training deemed equivalent by the Medical Professions Commission of the Federal Office of Public Health (MEBEKO).

You hold an FMH title in orthopaedic surgery or an equivalent title recognised by MEBEKO and possess the cantonal practice licence or are able to obtain it before starting your position from the Cantonal Medical Officer of Geneva.

You have proven experience in orthopaedic surgery allowing you to be autonomous and wish to specialise in spinal surgery. Your prior experience should ideally be gained in a university environment with a high volume of spinal surgery activity. Prior exposure to spinal surgery is essential.

For non-French speakers, a C1 level in spoken and written French is required.

You have excellent communication skills within a multidisciplinary team and with patients, you are dynamic, flexible, committed, and discreet. Moreover, you have demonstrated strong adaptability.

You can work day shifts as well as night and weekend shifts.
