Statistics matter. For you too.
The Federal Statistical Office (FSO) is the competence centre for public statistics and the main player in the Swiss data ecosystem. It produces statistical information, works towards data harmonisation through national data management, and develops processes based on data science to advance data interpretation. The FSO thus contributes to shaping public opinion and makes an important contribution to modern democratic governance.
Additional information
The Economics Division (WI) develops, within an integrated and coherent economic statistical system, information on the situation and development of the Swiss economy. The National Accounts Section (VGR) is responsible for compiling summary statistics, namely the national accounts. Their objective is to present, from a macroeconomic perspective, the economic activities carried out in Switzerland during a year. The best-known aggregate of the national accounts is the gross domestic product (GDP). The Structure and Economic Analysis Section (WSA) aims to develop strategies and define the framework necessary for conducting surveys and analyses. The section closely monitors each phase of the GDP calculation carried out at the FSO and ensures the consistency of the basic or summary economic statistics produced by the office.
