Description
JOB PURPOSE
The Head of Years 12 and 13 is responsible for providing pastoral and strategic leadership for students in their final two years of school. The primary purpose is to ensure the wellbeing, safety, and personal development of every student, fostering a supportive environment that enables them to reach their full potential in mind, body and spirit. This includes overseeing all aspects of student life, from behavior management and discipline to the implementation of wellbeing and co-curricular programs. The role serves as a key link between students, parents, house parents, and the senior leadership team, acting as a central point of contact for all student-related matters and upholding the school's core values. The following list should not be considered as definitive but acts as a guide to those areas for which the Assistant Head (Years 12 and 13) will be responsible.
KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Pastoral, Academic and Student Wellbeing Leadership
Lead pastoral and welfare efforts for Years 12 and 13, including strategic academic interventions and student progress tracking.
Collaborate with the Safeguarding and Wellbeing teams to ensure all students receive appropriate support.
Champion mental health awareness and participation by actively promoting the school's evidence-based wellbeing programs within the year groups, ensuring effective triage and referral of students with identified mental health needs, and liaising closely with the Wellbeing team to monitor the impact and uptake of preventative initiatives.
Attend weekly Pastoral Team meetings and contribute to the interventions relating to Year 12 and 13 students.
Develop and manage the Spirit and Tutor programmes for the cohort.
Work to embed Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives within the curriculum and school culture.
Oversee the creation and execution of service, co-curricular, and expedition opportunities.
Liaise and work alongside the University Advising department to support with the options and university applications process
Behavior and Discipline
Oversee the consistent application of the Student Behaviour Code for the senior year groups.
Manage sanctions and rewards systems, ensuring fairness and proportionality.
Guide staff on behavioral policies and provide professional development.
Ensure behaviour policies are applied with consideration for students' cultural backgrounds, neurodiversity, language needs, and vulnerabilities, fostering inclusion.
Chair Restorative and Academic panels, as well as Assistant Head Interventions and act as the final point of reference for complex behavioral cases.
Communicate sensitively with parents regarding student conduct.
Safeguarding
Fulfil the role as Deputy Designated Safeguarding lead representing Years 12 and 13 students, in line with the relevant job description for this role.
Attend regular safeguarding meetings and, when required, produce reports and presentations relating to trends and work in Years 12 and 13.
Whole School Contribution
Serve as a key member of the school's leadership team, contributing to strategic planning and upholding the school's ethos.
Act as a positive role model for staff and students.
Participate in staff recruitment and carry out delegated tasks from the Deputy Director.
Participate in a senior leadership duty rota on weekends.
Maintain a reduced teaching load.
Leadership and Management
This role requires a dedicated and proactive approach to ensuring student welfare and academic success. You will manage complex situations with a focus on communication, fairness, and the school's Guiding Principles.
OTHER TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Understand and implement all school policies and procedures, particularly those relating to safeguarding children and young people.
Undertake any other task which may be reasonably requested by the Deputy Director to assist in the smooth running of the team.
Understand the school’s Guiding Principles and uphold the ethos of the School at all times.
