Application Engineer

The Application Engineer is responsible for managing, integrating, and continuously improving the main business applications in the healthcare domain. He/she ensures that systems such as the HIS, RIS, PACS, and LIS are stable, secure, properly integrated, and adapted to operational and clinical needs.

By guaranteeing efficient processes and reliable application performance, this role directly contributes to improving services for patients, doctors, and other stakeholders.

Responsibilities

Application Management

  • Manage the company’s critical healthcare applications.
  • Ensure the stability, availability, performance, and user-friendliness of the applications.
  • Analyse level 3 incidents, coordinate their resolution, and implement sustainable solutions.
  • Maintain application documentation, configurations, and operational procedures.

System Integration and Development

  • Translate business and clinical needs into concrete system adaptations.
  • Integrate HIS, RIS, PACS, LIS systems and other associated healthcare applications.
  • Coordinate interfaces, data flows, and dependencies between different applications.
  • Participate in testing, validation, and implementation of application evolutions.
  • Prepare training materials and train users.

Stakeholder and Supplier Management

  • Collaborate with clinical, operational, and technical stakeholders to understand their needs and priorities.
  • Work closely with external suppliers and implementation partners.
  • Coordinate incident resolution, change requests, and service improvements.
  • Ensure clear communication among all stakeholders, especially users.

Governance, Security and Quality

  • Ensure compliance with internal IT standards, security requirements, and operational controls.
  • Participate in access management, data protection, and documentation requirements.
  • Contribute to risk assessments, architecture, and quality evaluations.

Projects and Transformation

  • Participate in application projects, system integrations, and deployments.
  • Contribute to digital and artificial intelligence initiatives.
  • Support post-acquisition integration activities.
  • Ensure an effective transition between projects and operational management.

Skills

  • Strong technical understanding of applications, infrastructure, networks, and IT security.
  • Experience with healthcare information systems such as HIS, RIS, LIS or PACS.
  • Ability to operate in complex, international environments involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Clear communication with business users, technical teams, and external suppliers.
  • Structured approach, sense of responsibility, and results orientation.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong service orientation and pragmatic solution-seeking to meet business needs.
  • Proficiency in English as well as French or German is required.

Qualifications

  • Degree or professional training in computer science, business informatics, health informatics, or equivalent field.
  • Significant experience in application engineering, application management, or health IT.
  • Experience in the Swiss healthcare sector is an asset.
  • Good understanding of healthcare processes, clinical workflows, or regulated environments is advantageous.
  • Certifications in IT service management, project management, IT security, or relevant technologies are appreciated.

Location and Travel

  • Position based in Fribourg or Zurich with possibility of partial remote work.
  • Occasional travel expected, approximately 20% of the time.
