Project Manager Green Labs


Main tasks and responsibilities

Within EPFL Sustainability, attached to the Vice Presidency for Research and Strategic Initiatives, your mission will be to work with laboratories, centres and platforms to estimate and reduce their environmental footprint without impacting the quality of research.

You will work in interface with various Vice Presidencies and EPFL Faculties, and you will be expected to:

Green Labs Strategy

  • On behalf of the head of service, support, monitor and ensure the planning and implementation of the Green Labs component of the Climate and Sustainability Strategy
  • Support laboratories, centres and platforms in reducing their environmental impact
  • Participate in defining targeted reduction objectives by laboratory type
  • Define and propose a financing plan to support labs and platforms in deploying reduction measures: the question of a dedicated fund is under consideration
  • Participate in national and international working groups
Mission

Support for laboratories

  • Carry out carbon assessments of research activities for laboratories, centres and platforms
  • Analyse energy and resource consumption
  • Raise awareness among research teams
  • Deploy certifications such as LEAF, Sparhub or My Green Lab
  • Advise on best practices particularly regarding energy, purchasing, travel, waste including plastic
  • Develop roadmaps and action plans

Communication & engagement

  • Support communication related to the deployment of EPFL’s research activity quantification tool, the CO2 Calculator
  • Participate in and/or organise, on behalf of the head of service, coordination meetings of the Green Labs team
  • Organise workshops and events
  • Create educational materials
  • Maintain and develop the website
  • Promote laboratory initiatives
  • Develop a culture of sustainable research
Profile

Required experience

  • University degree at master’s or doctoral level, or university of applied sciences in engineering, environmental sciences, data analysis, digital sciences or equivalent
  • At least 5 years’ experience in methods for monitoring and accounting greenhouse gas emissions
  • At least 5 years’ experience in managing cross-functional projects

Required skills

  • Mastery of carbon emissions accounting principles (e.g. GHG Protocol)
  • Knowledge of methods, tools and standards for quantifying environmental footprints such as life cycle analysis
  • Strong interest in sustainability and reducing environmental footprint
  • Experience with LCA software such as SimaPro is a plus
  • Proven knowledge of the academic world
  • Language skills: French and English mandatory
  • Analytical and synthesis skills, good writing ability
  • Ability to work transversally
  • Autonomy, proactivity and ability to make proposals
  • Ethics and scientific rigour
