Job Description

As the Cantonal Inspector for Food Safety and Consumer Protection within the Consumer Office (OFCO), attached to the Department of Agriculture, Sustainability, Climate and Digital, you ensure official controls and compliance with legal requirements. You carry out inspections, sampling and analyses, and contribute to risk monitoring. You supervise the team of inspectors and participate in its development. You work closely with the Cantonal Chemist and contribute to strategic decisions regarding consumer protection.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage and coordinate the corps of food and consumer goods inspectors and the staff of the Cantonal Office of Weights and Measures (BCPM)

  • Coordinate and ensure the technical and scientific consumer protection activities of the food and consumer goods inspectorate throughout the cantonal territory

  • Assist the Cantonal Chemist in the Office's strategy and participate in the transversal management of the Office as a member of the management team and deputy Cantonal Chemist

  • Anticipate and organise the continuing education of the food and consumer goods inspectors and the staff of the Cantonal Office of Weights and Measures (BCPM)

  • Represent the Food and Consumer Goods Inspectorate and manage external relations and information

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in food sciences or a field related to food safety or an equivalent qualification
  • Federal diploma in official food control (DCAl) and Federal diploma in management of official food control (DDCAl) (possibility to complete these trainings during the first two years of employment)
  • Minimum of 5 years of field experience and in-depth knowledge in the field of food safety

  • Recognised training and/or experience in management

  • Sense of responsibility and public service ethics

  • Global vision and sense of perspective

  • Organisation and time management

  • Conflict management

  • Leadership

  • Driving licence and availability of private vehicle for professional travel

  • Occasional inspections at night, early morning, as well as on Saturdays and Sundays

The Consumer Office (OFCO) is tasked with contributing to the protection of consumers and the proper functioning of economic practices.

In this capacity, it ensures the safety of foodstuffs and consumer goods to guarantee they do not pose a health risk. It also ensures the fairness of commercial transactions by promoting transparent practices compliant with the legal framework. Furthermore, it oversees the quality and sufficient availability of distributed water.
These missions are carried out in a coordinated and complementary manner by three groups: the Inspectorate, the laboratories, and the Cantonal Office of Weights and Measures. They also rely on essential transversal functions such as administration, legal affairs, and quality assurance, which contribute to the smooth operation and overall coherence of the Office.
