BI System Specialist


Mission

EPFL faces major challenges in Information System management. The Information Systems Directorate (DSI) is responsible for implementing EPFL’s digital strategy. These missions include, through a combination of direct and matrix responsibilities, the development and implementation of EPFL’s IT strategy and master plan, the digitalisation of business processes, IT security, management of central IT infrastructures, management of core business applications, as well as coordination with the IT services of the Faculties.


The VPO-SI is looking for a BI system specialist to strengthen its team. Reporting to the DSI, this person will contribute to implementing EPFL’s Business Intelligence strategy. Under the supervision of the BI unit manager, they will participate in solution development, project monitoring and user support. The main tasks include:

• development and management of the Data Warehouse (SAP BW/4 HANA),
• creation of reports and dashboards with Tableau,
• implementation of data extraction and transformation processes (ETL).

The specialist analyses, configures and develops software components based on specifications and functional requirements, applying current standards and best practices. They thus contribute to EPFL’s digital transformation in a collaborative, innovative and quality-oriented environment.
You play a key role in organising, consolidating and enhancing institutional data. As a true architect of data flows, you ensure the quality, availability and coherence of our BI ecosystem to support EPFL’s strategic and operational needs.

Main tasks and responsibilities

Data design and analysis
• Analyse business needs for reporting and analysis.
• Identify and qualify various data sources (ERP SAP, CRM, SQL databases, Excel files, etc.).
• Organise, synthesise and structure institutional data (administrative, academic, etc.).
• Design data warehouses and business datamarts.
Technical development (SAP BW/4HANA)
• Implement data flows.
• Create or adapt BEx queries exposable to Tableau.
• Develop CDS views or Open ODS Views if necessary.
• Manage data access authorisations.
• Create BW/4HANA modelling objects.
• Implement intelligent integration mechanisms (event detection, change management).
• Define ETL feeding flows from SAP S/4HANA or third-party systems.
Support, maintenance and optimisation
• Manage loading or performance incidents in BW.
• Document technical processes and data flows.
• Optimise query response times for visualisation tools.
Reporting and dashboard creation (Tableau, Analysis for Office)
• Design dashboards in Tableau from BW/4HANA views (BEx or CDS).
• Ensure dashboards align with business needs (Finance, HR, Academic, etc.).
• Create interactive and ergonomic visualisations based on UX best practices.
• Manage connections to SAP BW/4HANA sources in Tableau.
• Collaborate with end users to iterate on dashboards.
• Integrate data governance rules into produced reports.
Support and training
• Train end users in data interpretation and exploitation.
• Provide close support and anticipate evolving needs.
• Document solutions, processes and best practices.

Contribution to BI and DWH projects
• Participate in digital transformation projects (e.g. migration to BW/4 HANA, integration of new flows).
• Contribute to all project phases.
• Organise regression tests, validate test scenarios and ensure participation of relevant users.
• Ensure functional documentation is produced and accessible to the entire team.
• Follow or apply project methodology according to EPFL project management standards.

Technological watch and best practices
• Train on new SAP BW/4HANA, SAP Business Data Cloud, Tableau Cloud features.
• Propose innovative solutions to improve data usage (data self-service, automation).
• Contribute to upskilling business users through training or support.
Other tasks:
• Provide cover for a team colleague.

Profile

• Higher degree in computer science (HES, University or EPF) or equivalent training (Business Informatics)
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in implementing and developing Business Intelligence solutions on SAP BW or BW4/HANA,
• Experience in data modelling, ETL flows, data planning and loading, HANA views and table functions
• Good knowledge of visualisation tools: Tableau, SAP Business Objects. SAP Analytics Cloud is a plus
• Good knowledge of ABAP, SQL and Python languages
• Knowledge of ERP environments - SAP ECC / S/4HANA, extractors and embedded analytics SAP S/4 - including CDS Views: a real plus.
• Knowledge of the Airflow orchestrator is a plus
• Knowledge of Agile methodology, Scrum framework
• Knowledge of Git or other versioning tools is a plus
• Languages: French (C1) and excellent knowledge of English (minimum level C1 / B2), German is a plus.
