With nearly 1,000 staff members, the Department of Psychiatry fulfils a triple mission concerning the treatment of mental disorders, education, and research. The department's mission is to detect and effectively treat increasingly common and diverse pathologies while respecting patients and their relatives.
Quality teaching is also provided by the department to students as well as to doctors in training for specialist certification, raising awareness of psychological, biological, and social dimensions. The department also supports high-quality training in psychotherapy.
Finally, the department seeks to understand the origins of mental disorders through cognitive and affective neurosciences, a true flagship of the Geneva site. To this end, it conducts patient-oriented academic and clinical research meeting high standards of quality.
The geriatric psychiatry service at the Geneva University Hospitals is the largest university institution in Switzerland for the care of psychiatric illnesses in the elderly. A particular feature is the offer of an integrated postgraduate training programme in psychiatry and psychotherapy of the elderly, which also includes neurology as well as physical medicine and neurological rehabilitation.
In response to growing demand linked to the demographic evolution of the elderly and our commitment in the field of diagnosis and treatment of cognitive disorders and dementias, the Dementia Treatment and Prevention Unit (UTPD) of the SPG is expanding and recruiting an assistant physician to work alongside the unit's responsible assistant physician.
You will ensure the quality of the unit's medical services and participate in integrative and holistic clinical care to relieve elderly patients by establishing a precise diagnosis and assessment for each patient, developing and using the best available treatments by studying the scientific basis and health service administration for the elderly in close collaboration with caregivers, medico-social institutions (EMS), doctors from other specialties, notably geriatrics and neurology, private family practitioners, and community health workers.
You will also be involved in intensified and personalised psychotherapeutic intervention for patients, including within a special programme for people with mild cognitive impairment. You will work within a team of about 50 people including specialists in psychiatry and neurology, nurses, clinical psychologists, and secretaries.
You will participate in establishing research projects aimed at enabling early identification of dementia and links with other somatic pathologies. You will also contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. We are available to support you in your academic development efforts.
Qualifications
You hold a federal medical diploma or training deemed equivalent by the Medical Professions Commission of the Federal Office of Public Health (MEBEKO).
You possess a FMH specialist title in psychiatry and psychotherapy or neurology, or an equivalent recognised by MEBEKO. You are interested in innovative, comprehensive, and integrative approaches aimed at mitigating the effects of mental and somatic disorders in people with cognitive diseases and dementia.
Ideally, you already have experience in elderly care, including typical comorbidities of old age. Ideally, you have completed or are about to complete your doctoral thesis.
You find it easy to work in networks and collaborate with doctors from other specialties, enabling early and interdisciplinary management of the most diverse clinical manifestations in people with dementia. It is essential to be willing to work in a team, be flexible regarding clinical activities, and supervise doctors in postgraduate training.
Your natural ability to mobilise a team, your open-mindedness, and your capacity to support young doctors in their practice are undeniable assets for thriving in this position. You also know how to adjust services to growing demands and are comfortable working autonomously while spontaneously consulting colleagues from other professions to benefit from their expertise in patient care.
For non-French speakers, a C1 level in spoken and written French is required.
